NYCHRC Charge Alleges Galaxy Coop Ignored Complaints Doorman Sexually Harassed Women Residents

galaxy-1A resident of the Galaxy Coop, 51 West 81st Street, filed a Charge of sexual harassment with the NYC Human Rights Commission against the Galaxy and Rudd Management. The following are allegations and are taken from the Charge.

The Building Manager received numerous complaints that a doorman, Robert, sexually harassed five or more residents, twice groped a USPS Letter Carrier’s breast, and entered a young female resident’s apartment surreptitiously after telling her to sleep in the nude if her apartment was too hot. In response to these complaints the Building Manager did nothing more than caution Robert to respect residents’ “boundaries,” because he feared what Robert would do to the residents if he found out that they had complained.

The Letter Carrier complained directly to the Building Manager. The others complained to a different doorman (the “doorman”), who relayed their complaints to the Building Manager.

Due to management’s failure to act, the resident who has filed the Charge was physically and verbally sexually harassed. She made a written complaint to the Building Manager, but the sexual harassment continued. The Charge alleges that her:

written complaint prompted a conversation . . . in which [the Building Manager and the doorman] recounted all the complaints they had received . . .  [the Building Manager] told [the doorman] “this is enough I have to do something because this is too many complaints.”

It was not until she contacted him yet again in writing that the Building Manager finally terminated Robert.

Through their lawyers, Rudd and the Galaxy claim they “had no knowledge” Robert was sexually harassing residents.
